Premiere Doug Ford Backs Down
After stating repeatedly that Ontario and Canada would not back down, Doug Ford has reversed his stance
After repeatedly stating that Ontario and Canada would not back down until American tariffs on Canadian exports were dropped, Doug Ford has backed down.
Premier Ford implemented a 25% tariff on electricity exports to the United States in response to repeated tariff threats from Canada’s southern neighbor. Ford posted on X (formerly Twitter) that, after discussions with United States Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, he agreed to drop the tariffs. According to Ford, Secretary Lutnick has agreed to meet on Thursday to discuss a revised USMCA.
“Pursuant to his previous executive orders, a 25 percent tariff on steel and aluminum, with no exceptions or exemptions, will go into effect for Canada and all of our other trading partners at midnight, March 12,” White House spokesman Kush Desai said in a statement to NPR Tuesday afternoon.
