Prime Minister Carney Expected to Announce Federal Election Sunday
Major news outlets are reporting that parliament will be dissolved on Sunday March 23 and an election announced for the end of April or early May
Many news outlets such as Reuters and The Globe and Mail are reporting that Prime Minister Mark Carney is likely to dissolve parliament and call a federal election for the end of April or early May. They are quoting unnamed sources from within the Liberal Party.
Several polls over the last few weeks have reported a surge in support for the Liberal Party closing a massive deficit and now leading the Conservative Party. This surge coincides with Mark Carney's recent victory in the Liberal Party leadership race.
The next federal election is not due until October of this year. The Liberal Party is likely trying to capitalize on their perceived momentum in the polls without giving voters much of a chance to change their minds. An April 28th election would be one of the quickest campaigns in Canadian history.
This also comes amid tariffs and a trade war with the U.S. as well as President Donald Trump’s calls for the annexation of Canada. President Trump also said recently he’d prefer to deal with a liberal as opposed to a conservative and called out Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre as being “no friend of his”.
While Poilievre has been calling for an early election for quite some time, Canadians seem to have responded to Mark Carney’s ability to tackle the ongoing tensions with Canada’s southern neighbor.
As of this time there has been no official announcement nor comment from either the Liberal Party or Conservative Party.
